Camp Blue Skies
I just returned from a weekend at Camp Blue Skies serving at their NC Session #1 for 2017. This foundation provides 5-day, 4-night overnight camp experience for adults with developmental disabilities. In addition to the many recreational and outdoor activities available to the campers, we offer learning life skills activities to assist individual independence. Balance Your Body is a health and fitness life skills program that I have delivered at camp for the last 5 years. The joy you see in their eyes, the peace you hear in their laughter, and the confidence they express in their voices makes it all so rewarding to serve there. The authentic connection I experience is so refreshing that it leaves me wanting to keep going back every chance I get. When we a chance to give these special needs individuals a chance at being their best self and being accepted just the way they are it changes you forever. It’s a magical place where this can occur. These special people inspire you to bring the best you have for them, and they return it with unconditional love and it becomes an unbreakable bond that lifts both the served and servants together. I am so blessed to have this opportunity to serve and will go back again this coming weekend for the second session. My soul is healed each time I serve at Camp Blue Skies.
Each camper has their own story that they come with. They touch you with their authentic joy that they freely give when you just take them as they are. Every little smile or side hug, or high five just make your heart lift. To know they are happy and at peace really makes it all worth while. It’s not easy but totally worth it. To be really present with these campers, staff, and volunteers takes all you have. The renewal in my spirit that I feel each time I come gives me the strength to go back to the real world and make to the next camp.

The patterns and pathways to long life can make a huge difference in health and longevity. Typically, healthy fit individuals will live 10-12 year longer than those who do not take care for their health. One of the most effective means of adding positive adaptive patterns to your lifestyle is movement (exercise).
